Resonance tuning and glottal behaviour in different vocal qualities in Bulgarian women's singing. A pilot study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Bulgarian folk music usually involves women as singers and men as instrumentalists. It is often performed outdoors, where high levels of radiated vocal power are preferred. Two singing productions can be distinguished, which differ by their perceived loudness and timbre. The louder, more projected sound is labelled as /teshka/ (meaning /heavy/), and it tends to be used more in slower, sadder songs. The gentler, more lyrical sound is labelled as /leka/ (meaning /light/), and to some extent it shares timbral similarities with the classical or "head" voice used in Western European singing. What are the differences between these two Bulgarian singing productions, what are their common characteristics, and how do they differ from the classical "head" voice production?

Resonance strategies used in Bulgarian women's singing style: a pilot study.
Are the characteristic timbre and loudness of Bulgarian women's singing related to tuning of resonances of the vocal tract? We studied an Australian female singer, who practises and teaches Bulgarian singing technique. Two different vocal qualities of this style were studied. The louder teshka is characterized by a sonorous voice production. The less loud leka has a smoother timbre that is clos...
متن کاملVocal tract resonances in singing: Variation with laryngeal mechanism for male operatic singers in chest and falsetto registers
Seven male operatic singers sang the same notes and vowels in their chest and their falsetto registers, covering the overlap frequency range where two main laryngeal mechanisms can be identified by means of electroglottography: M1 in chest register and M2 in falsetto register. Glottal contact quotients determined using electroglottography were typically lower by 0.27 in M2 than in M1. Vocal tra...

متن کاملPhysiological and acoustic characteristics of the female Music Theater voice.
Three Music Theater vocal qualities ("chesty belt," "twangy belt," and "legit") were investigated in female singers at their overlap range, between F#4-D5 (~370-600 Hz). Six experienced Music Theater singers performed each quality on two different vowels ([e], [ɔ]). Audio and electroglottographic (EGG) signals were recorded as well as the vocal tract impedance. In chesty belt and twangy belt, s...
متن کاملSinger Identification and Transformation through Dynamic Modeling of Vocal Fold and Vocal Tract Parameters
Oftentimes when we listen to a familiar singer, the unique qualities of that performer’s voice allow us to establish the singer’s identity with relative ease. It is believed that the unique acoustic qualities of an individual singer’s voice arise from a combination of innate physical factors (e.g. vocal tract and vocal fold physiology) and individual characteristics of performance and expressio...
